The children in Kindergarten delve deeper into their themed topics using enquiry based learning where they investigate, explore and make predictions about their topics. They are given tools to help them discover their own answers and are encouraged to use their discoveries to ask more questions, prompting further investigations. The children are given daily opportunities to discuss topics, role-play, and create stories to share in different languages.

Kindergarten children develop their social and emotional skills and are encouraged to actively reflect on their uses and choices of languages, as well as to notice the similarities and differences between them.
English reading and writing continues using the next steps of the UK program which was started in Pre-School. Reading and writing in German is introduced as well. Most children end their kindergarten years at Tandem IMS with a solid foundation in literacy skills and are ready to take on the challenge of furthering both reading and writing in two languages in first grade. The children are also introduced to numbers, the number system and basic mathematical concepts during their Kindergarten years to prepare them for the beginning of Primary School. Literacy and mathematical objectives in Tandem’s Kindergarten exceed those set for the Swiss public school system.
Other activities such as excursions, project weeks, nature walks, specialist art lessons, music, IT projects and gym will increase throughout Kindergarten 1 and 2.
Through our translanguaging approach, children at Kindergarten level are introduced to the daily use of several languages. English and German teachers spend approximately half the week co-teaching each class. We aim to support children in their ability to comfortably interact in different languages whether in academic or social activities. Kindergarten children are given daily opportunities to discuss diverse topics, role-play, and create stories to share in different languages. These discussions often lead to an investigation of the words and expressions used within the language itself. As a result, Kindergarten children are encouraged to progress in language and concept switching.
All Kindergarten children also have the option of choosing French as an additional language.

Enquiry-based learning encourages pupils to engage in the process of gathering data and to seek answers to their questions. Rather than being handed information, children are taught to ask questions, gather information, interpret data, and produce practical solutions. It teaches pupils to develop insightful questions, to take action and to understand context.
For approximately 50% of the time in Kindergarten, there are two qualified teachers teaching the class at the same time. In addition to our fully qualified teachers, there are also staff members in training assisting the groups for the majority of the week.
Yes, all of our teachers are native speakers of the language that they are teaching in.
Unfortunately our Early and Late Care needs to be booked as packages. Children in Kindergarten are able to come from 07:30 in the morning each day if they have the Early Care Package. If they are enrolled for Late Care, they can stay until 18:30.
Alternatively, if care is required on only one particular day, an After School Club may be an attractive option. In emergency situations, an individual Early or Late Care can be booked in advance and invoiced according to our fee schedule.
Tandem IMS’ curriculum takes place during the same calendar weeks as the City of Zurich’s public schools. Tandem IMS is however only officially closed for 4 weeks during the year (and some staff development days). These four weeks consist of two weeks at Christmas and two weeks in the summer holidays.
During the other holidays, we offer a range of holiday if additional care is required. Further information on these clubs can be found in our ECA section.
We have established our own bus service to and from our school in Zurich.
