At TANDEM IMS Gymnasium, we implement a comprehensive philosophy of Humanitarian Action and Sustainability, recognising the vital role of non profit organisations in society, both locally and globally. Our curriculum equips pupils with a deep understanding of complex sustainability challenges such as poverty, health, education, and human rights, while exploring how individuals, communities, and organisations respond to crises including natural disasters, conflict, and health emergencies. By combining empathy with practical action, students learn to analyse real world needs and develop ethical, effective approaches to coordinated aid and the protection of human rights. Unlike Humanities, which examines human culture and expression, Humanitarian Studies centres on applied problem solving, responsibility, and making a meaningful difference in the world.

Our pupils explore the history, trends, and challenges of the non-profit as well as the profit sector, UN Sustainable Development Goals, fair trade principles, and ethical businesses worldwide. They will understand how language, culture, and tradition shape humanitarian work.

Students develop practical skills in team and project leadership, communication and coordination alongside strong ethical and reflective capacities. These form essential foundations for future pathways in entrepreneurship, business, politics, and humanitarian work across diverse professional fields.

Our pupils learn key legal and management basics through working with international frameworks, budgeting and fundraising, safety and security, evaluation, and professional reporting. These skills are essential for responsible and effective work in both NGOs and business environments.

Our students will analyse social issues, explore their root causes, and develop potential solutions through case studies of humanitarian crises. In doing so, they strengthen their analytical capacities and they will engage in systems thinking within sustainable development. This is key to gaining insight into the role of policy as well as understanding the frameworks needed for societal change. Furthermore, our students learn the principles of strategic planning and impact evaluation. This enables them to design initiatives thoughtfully and to assess their effectiveness over time.

Students build engagement, resilience, and flexibility through hands-on work that requires effort, patience, and commitment. They learn to adapt when things do not go as planned, to persist when challenges arise, and to take responsibility for their own progress. Over time, they develop confidence in their ability to navigate complexity and change. This understanding of personal responsibility becomes the foundation for acting responsibly within organisations, communities, and society as a whole. Through regular programme design - linking here to Tandem IMS’s umbrella philosophy of Design thinking - they also strengthen their engagement and creativity by turning ideas into thoughtful, practical initiatives.
Understanding ecological balance and environmental protection
Promoting equity, justice, and community wellbeing
Building viable systems that support long-term development
While similar to the traditional Swiss Gymi profile "Wirtschaft und Recht," our Humanitarian Studies programme differs fundamentally by focusing on non-profit organisations and humanitarian action. By fostering open-minded, responsible, and committed young individuals, we develop informed and engaged citizens who understand the significance of humanitarian work and are prepared to address global challenges across diverse fields including international relations, diplomacy, journalism, and environmental studies.
